Step 3: Improve Curbside Access

Changes inside Union Station have impacted curbside traffic as passengers squeeze through just a few entrances. Also, an internal roadway for taxis was closed after September 11, 2001.

Now, taxis are dropping off their passengers in traffic and several CTA bus stops are located on the wrong side of the street, requiring passengers to cross traffic.

On Canal St., intercity buses and private shuttle buses are competing with taxis and kiss-and-ride passengers for a single block of curb space.

The resulting congestion creates a real safety problem.

Help may be on the way, the Chicago Department of Transportation is conducting a traffic study of the streets around both Union Station and Ogilvie station. Additionally, the City Council has passed an ordinance that will move some intercity buses one block south.
